Kanye West’s Cruel Summer at Cannes Film Festival Recap

The official premiere of Kanye West’s short film, Cruel Summer, debuted this year at the Cannes Film Festival. Cruel Summer was written, produced, AND directed by Kanye West who may deserve to be referred to as a renaissance man now with all the different things he is accomplishing as of late. However, West’s action of taking three different roles for the film is not what makes the short film innovative. Rather, it is the fact that the film is displayed on seven screens. Shot in Qatar, Cruel Summer uses a script from Elon Rutberg where a Lamborghini thief played by Kid Cudi, falls in love with a blind Arabic girl, and makes it his mission to give her the gift of vision in hopes of her father’s blessing for the two to get married.

The film’s first screening was attended by many celebrities and stars such as Jay-Z, Kim Kardashian, and Theophilus London. The film also acted as precursor for the G.O.O.D. music compilation that will be released later this summer.
